Today, a portrait of the former Rector of the University of Latvia, Professor Indriķis Muižnieks, was unveiled in the Senate Hall of the University of Latvia, where it now joins the gallery of portraits of other ex-Rectors. The portrait of Muižnieks is the work of Latvian artist Ritums Ivanovs.
LU rector Gundars Berzins: "The University of Latvia's tradition of displaying the portraits of former Rectors in the Senate Hall is a way of expressing gratitude for their contributions to the University's creation and development, and for the success that it has achieved. The portrait gallery in the Senate Hall also has a certain symbolic significance, as it is possible that all former rectors are "watching" how we make decisions today. This serves as a reminder of our collective responsibility to ensure the continuous enhancement and progress of our institution."
Professor Indriķis Muižnieks, as always, offered a light-hearted perspective, joking that the artist had captured his true self, a testament to the challenges and rewards of photorealism. "The long years of life at the university have done their work," said Muižnieks with a smile.
Indriķis Muižnieks (born 1953) is a Latvian biologist, Professor at the University of Latvia, former Rector of the University of Latvia (2015-2024), member of the Latvian Academy of Sciences, Honorary Fellow of the Latvian Students' Corporation Patria. The University of Latvia is a Latvian academic and professional higher education and scientific institution.
